Certain Kias built between 2010 and 2022 left the factory without an engine immobilizer. Kia’s own service bulletins name the models and give the production date windows, which means you can check whether yours falls inside one.
Which Kias were affected
Kia’s bulletin CS2311, hosted by NHTSA, covers certain 2010–2022 model year Kia vehicles “which may not have been equipped with an immobilizer,” and lists them by production window rather than model year alone:
| Model | Production window |
|---|---|
| Soul (AM) | 27 Dec 2018 – 19 Apr 2021 |
| Soul (SK3) | 1 Jun 2017 – 29 Oct 2021 |
| Soul (PS) | listed, window not stated |
| Rio (JB) | 23 Mar 2010 – 1 Jul 2011 |
| Rio (SC) | 18 Aug 2010 – 22 Mar 2013 |
| Rio (UB) | 21 Jun 2011 – 31 Mar 2017 |
| Forte (TD) | 7 Nov 2012 – 18 Jul 2016 |
| Forte (YD) | listed, window not stated |
| Sportage (SL) | 6 May 2010 – 16 Nov 2015 |
| Sedona (VQ) | 26 Feb 2013 – 4 Apr 2014 |
A separate bulletin, CS2305, covers 2014–2018 Forte (YD), 2017–2018 Forte (YDm) and 2019–2021 Forte (BDm) as vehicles that “may not be equipped with an immobilizer.”
Production windows, not model years. Your car’s build date is on the label inside the driver’s door jamb. If your Kia is one of these models and the build date falls inside the window, it’s likely affected.
When Kia made immobilizers standard
Unlike Hyundai, Kia didn’t publish a single clean cutoff date, and we’re not going to invent one.
What the bulletins show is that coverage extends into the 2022 model year, so some 2022 turn-key Kias still lacked an immobilizer. Standardisation happened during that model year as a running change rather than on a specific date. If your Kia is a 2022, the door jamb label and the model list are the way to check rather than the year on the registration.

What Kia has offered — two different remedies
This is where Kia’s situation differs from Hyundai’s, and the distinction matters if you own one.
For vehicles that can take it: a software upgrade. Kia issued a series of bulletins adding anti-theft ignition-start logic through a software reflash. No new hardware.
For vehicles that can’t: an ignition cylinder protector. Bulletin CS2311 covers a physical protector permanently fitted over the ignition cylinder on vehicles not eligible for the software.
Both are dealer programmes. If you own an affected Kia, that’s a Kia dealer conversation first.
If your Kia has the ignition cylinder protector
Worth knowing before you need ignition work, because it has a consequence people don’t find out about until later.
The protector is permanently affixed. Kia’s own bulletin notes that once it’s fitted, any future ignition switch replacement requires replacing the full cylinder assembly along with a new protector — rather than the ordinary cylinder work described on our ignition repair page.
So a protected Kia with a worn ignition is a bigger job than the same car would have been before. Not a reason to skip the protector — but if your ignition is already stiff or the key needs a technique, it’s worth mentioning when you call, because it changes what’s involved.
What this means for your keys
If your Kia has no engine immobilizer, the key is mechanical — no chip, nothing to program. Simpler and cheaper work than an immobilizer-equipped car.
If it does have one, the key carries a chip that has to be paired to the vehicle.
Programming an immobilizer-equipped Kia
Newer Kias sit behind a security gateway, shared with the rest of the Hyundai Motor Group. A diagnostic tool has to validate against that gateway first, and validation runs on credentials issued through the National Automotive Service Task Force.
Key teaching is also PIN-gated, so the security code has to be obtained before a key can be added.
Not an onboard procedure, and not something every shop is equipped for. Our key fob replacement guide covers the credentialing side.
If every key is lost
All-keys-lost on an immobilizer-equipped Kia needs the same gateway validation and PIN access — a longer job than adding a spare. Bring every key you own to the appointment.
What we do on site. We cut and program Kia keys and smart keys at the vehicle, including all-keys-lost. Most jobs need a PIN code from the manufacturer’s registry, which we request with your proof of ownership. A few 2020-and-later models are limited by the programming tools; we’ll tell you on the phone.
What to have ready
- Model year and model
- The build date from the driver’s door jamb label — more useful than the model year on these
- Whether it starts with a key or a button
- Whether an ignition cylinder protector has been fitted
- Every key you own
- Proof of ownership — registration or title, and matching photo ID
What it costs
A mechanical key for a non-immobilizer Kia and a proximity fob for a gateway-equipped one are different jobs entirely. What determines car key replacement cost covers what moves it.
Fob just stopped working? It may only be the battery.
Key fob battery guideFrequently asked questions
Which Kia models didn’t have an immobilizer?
Certain Soul, Rio, Forte, Sportage and Sedona vehicles built between 2010 and 2022. Kia’s bulletins list them by production window — the table is above.
How do I check whether mine is affected?
Find the build date on the label inside the driver’s door jamb and check it against the production window for your model. The model year alone isn’t enough.
When did Kia make immobilizers standard?
Kia didn’t publish a single cutoff date. Coverage extends into the 2022 model year, so standardisation happened as a running change during that year rather than on a fixed date.
What has Kia done about it?
Two remedies. A software upgrade adding anti-theft ignition logic for eligible vehicles, and a permanently fitted ignition cylinder protector for those that aren’t eligible. Both are dealer programmes.
Does the ignition cylinder protector affect future repairs?
Yes. Kia’s bulletin notes that once fitted, an ignition switch replacement requires the full cylinder assembly plus a new protector, rather than ordinary cylinder work.
Can a locksmith cut a key for a non-immobilizer Kia?
Yes, and it’s simpler work — a mechanical key with no chip to program.
Can a locksmith program a key for a newer Kia?
It requires a capable diagnostic tool plus credentials to validate the security gateway, and the security PIN. Not every shop has both.
