Every kind, one call

Audi shares its immobilizer platform with Volkswagen, so much of what applies to a Golf applies to a Q5. There’s one Audi-specific detail worth knowing, and it’s about where the car actually reads your key.

Where your Audi reads the key

On recent Audis, immobilizer servicing requires the key to be placed at a reader coil — a specific spot in the cabin rather than anywhere convenient.

Audi’s own bulletin describes the location varying by model. On the Q5 and A3 families there’s a pictogram marking it in the cup holder. On the e-tron GT it’s the forward cup.

Placement matters more than it sounds. Get it wrong and the car reports “FAZ1552 – Key status invalid” and the adaptation is blocked. That message points at key positioning rather than at a faulty key or a faulty car, which is worth knowing if you’ve seen it.

Which Audis this is documented for

Audi’s bulletin covers:

ModelModel years
Q5, SQ52018–2024
Q5 e quattro2020–2024
Q5 Sportback, SQ5 Sportback2021–2024
A3, S3, RS32022–2024
e-tron GT, RS e-tron GT2022–2024

Outside that list we’re relying on the shared platform rather than an Audi-specific document, and we’ll say so rather than implying otherwise.

There’s no franchised Audi dealer in the Hudson Valley

As things stand, none of the counties we cover — Dutchess, Putnam, Ulster or Orange — has a franchised Audi dealership. The nearest is in Westchester, a county south.

That matters more for an Audi than for most makes, because the key work already routes through manufacturer-credentialed access. If your Audi won’t start and needs dealer-level provisioning, the dealer isn’t a short trip across town — it’s a drive out of the region, in a car that may not be drivable.

A mobile locksmith with the right authenticated access can come to the vehicle instead. Dealer networks do change, so it’s worth checking for your own situation — but that’s the picture at the time of writing.

What the shared platform means

Audi and Volkswagen use the same Volkswagen Group immobilizer architecture. Two things follow that are documented on the VW side:

Component protection. Certain control modules are cryptographically tied to the vehicle’s immobilizer, so a module taken from another car won’t work until it’s adapted. This is confirmed in Volkswagen’s documentation; we haven’t found an Audi-specific bulletin stating it, so treat it as a platform trait rather than an Audi-stamped fact.

Credentialed access. Immobilizer work runs through the manufacturer’s diagnostic software with an authenticated online login, and key codes are routed through the credentialed access system rather than being publicly available. No open-OBD path.

Our Volkswagen page covers both in more detail, and the underlying system is the same.

One thing we won’t claim

You’ll find pages naming a specific immobilizer generation for your Audi — IMMO 4, IMMO 5, and so on.

Audi’s own bulletin prints no generation number. Volkswagen’s bulletin names its system; Audi’s doesn’t. We could borrow VW’s label and stamp it on your Audi, and it would probably be right — but “probably right” isn’t the standard we’re using for something a customer might act on.

Tell us the year and model and we’ll tell you what’s involved, rather than which generation number someone on a forum assigned it.

Why this page is shorter

Because Audi’s public documentation is thinner than Volkswagen’s, and padding it would mean writing things we can’t stand behind.

One Audi-specific bulletin exists and we’ve used it. Everything else genuinely is the shared Volkswagen Group platform, so the Volkswagen page is where the fuller treatment lives.

What we do on site. We cut and program keys for older Audis at the vehicle. Many newer Audi platforms are dealer-only for key programming, so tell us the year and model first and we’ll say honestly whether it’s a job for us or for the dealer.

What to have ready

  • Model year and model
  • Every Audi key you own
  • Whether you’ve seen a “key status invalid” message
  • Whether any control module has been replaced
  • Proof of ownership — registration or title, and matching photo ID

What it costs

Audi key work is credentialed and can involve module adaptation beyond the key itself. What determines car key replacement cost covers what moves it.

Frequently asked questions

Where does my Audi read the key for programming?

At a reader coil in the cabin. On Q5 and A3 models there’s a pictogram in the cup holder; on the e-tron GT it’s the forward cup. The location varies by model.

What does "FAZ1552 – Key status invalid" mean?

It appears during immobilizer adaptation when the key isn’t correctly positioned at the reader coil. It points at placement rather than a faulty key.

Are Audi and Volkswagen keys the same system?

The immobilizer platform is shared across the Volkswagen Group, so the architecture and the access requirements are the same. Model-specific details differ.

Can I fit a used module from another Audi?

Volkswagen Group vehicles use component protection, which ties certain modules to a specific vehicle. This is documented on the VW side; treat it as applying to your Audi and ask before buying a used module.

What immobilizer generation does my Audi have?

Audi’s own bulletin doesn’t print one, so we don’t state one. Give us the year and model and we’ll tell you what’s involved.

Can a locksmith program an Audi key?

With authenticated access to Audi’s diagnostic system and credentialed key code access, yes. There’s no open-OBD route on these vehicles.
