Jeep’s immobilizer behaves differently from most. Instead of refusing to start, it lets the engine fire and then shuts it down after about two seconds. If that’s what your Jeep is doing, the problem is almost certainly the key.

The two-second signature

Most immobilizers prevent the engine starting at all. Jeep’s Sentry Key Immobilizer System takes a different approach: if it doesn’t recognise a valid electronically coded key, the engine is permitted to run for roughly two seconds and then stops.

That’s an unusually useful diagnostic. A Jeep that catches and dies almost immediately, over and over, is behaving exactly as designed with an unrecognised key. It isn’t fuel, it isn’t the battery, and it isn’t the starter.

The system also locks out after repeated invalid attempts, so if you’ve tried several times and it’s stopped responding, that’s the system rather than a new fault.

For the general version of this diagnosis across makes, see our ignition switch symptoms page and how car immobilizers work.

How long Jeeps have had this

The Grand Cherokee has carried the Sentry Key system as standard equipment since the 1999 model year, per Chrysler’s own filings.

The architecture evolved — the later generation combines the immobilizer with the remote entry module and, on many vehicles, a wireless ignition node and a fob with an integrated key, often called a FOBIK.

We’re not going to tell you which model year your particular Jeep line changed between generations. Wrangler, Cherokee, Compass, Renegade, Gladiator and Grand Cherokee all transitioned on their own schedules, and we haven’t found a primary source mapping them. Plenty of sites will give you a confident answer; those trace to forums and parts vendors.

Give us the year and model and we’ll tell you what applies to your vehicle.

Your Jeep key can’t be reused from another Jeep

Worth knowing before buying a second-hand fob online.

Once a Sentry Key has been programmed to a vehicle, it can’t be used on a different one. That’s stated in Chrysler’s filings, and it means a used key from a scrapyard or an auction listing is not a shortcut — it’s a key that has already been bound to someone else’s Jeep.

A new, unprogrammed fob is a different matter. But “programmed” and “unprogrammed” are not interchangeable, whatever a listing says.

The system does hold multiple keys — filings reference a maximum of eight — so adding a spare doesn’t mean giving one up.

Why programming got harder

Two changes, both traceable.

Chrysler restricted PIN access. Programming a Jeep key requires a vehicle-specific immobilizer PIN, and direct access to those codes was shut off. Work moved toward dealer-level tools and capable aftermarket equipment with authorised code access.

Then came the Secure Gateway. After a widely publicised remote-access demonstration on a Jeep in 2015, the manufacturer introduced a security module sitting between the diagnostic port and the vehicle’s internal network. The 2017 Pacifica was the first to receive parts of it, and it spread across nearly all new vehicles from the group afterwards.

For key work, that means a second barrier: on gateway-equipped Jeeps, a tool has to authenticate through the gateway before it can even use the immobilizer PIN. Two locks, not one.

Our key fob replacement guide covers how this kind of manufacturer credentialing works.

If you have two working keys

Some older Sentry Key vehicles have an onboard procedure allowing a third key to be added using two that already work, without a diagnostic tool.

Check your owner’s manual before assuming yours does. We haven’t confirmed which Jeep model years support it against Chrysler’s own documentation, and we’d rather you check a manual that covers your vehicle than take our word for a procedure we can’t verify. If it’s in there, it’s worth trying first.

If you have fewer than two working keys, that route isn’t available regardless — it requires two.

What we do on site. We cut and program Jeep keys and fobs at the vehicle, including when every key is lost. On 2018-and-later models the security gateway has to be bypassed first, which adds time but is done on site.

What to have ready

  • Model year and model
  • How many working keys you have
  • What happens exactly — no crank, or starts and dies after a couple of seconds
  • Whether it’s a bladed key, a FOBIK, or push-button start
  • Proof of ownership — registration or title, and matching photo ID

What it costs

A pre-gateway Jeep and a recent one aren’t the same job — the newer vehicle adds an authentication layer before any programming can begin. What determines car key replacement cost covers what moves it.

Fob just stopped working? It may only be the battery.

Frequently asked questions

My Jeep starts and then dies after a couple of seconds.

That’s the signature of the Sentry Key immobilizer not recognising the key. The system allows the engine to run briefly before shutting it down. It points at the key rather than fuel, battery or starter.

Can I use a used Jeep key fob from another vehicle?

No. Once a Sentry Key has been programmed to a vehicle it can’t be used on a different one. A used programmed fob won’t work on your Jeep.

How many keys can my Jeep hold?

Chrysler filings reference a maximum of eight programmed keys, so adding a spare doesn’t require giving one up.

Can I program a Jeep key myself?

Some older Sentry Key vehicles have an onboard procedure needing two already-working keys. Check your owner’s manual for your specific year — we can’t confirm which years support it, and would rather you check than take our word.

Why do newer Jeeps need special equipment?

Two reasons. Programming needs a vehicle-specific immobilizer PIN, and direct access to those codes was restricted. Newer vehicles also have a security gateway that a tool must authenticate through before it can do anything.

What is a FOBIK?

A fob with an integrated key — the combined remote and key used across a generation of Chrysler-group vehicles including many Jeeps.
