Some Hyundais built before late 2021 left the factory without an engine immobilizer. If yours is one of them, that changes what your key does, how the car is secured, and what your options are. There’s a ten-second way to find out.

Does your Hyundai have an engine immobilizer?

You don’t need the model list to answer this. Hyundai’s own dealer bulletin gives two checks:

Does it start with a push button? If yes, it has an immobilizer. Regardless of year.

Is there an immobilizer lamp in the instrument cluster? Usually a small key or car-with-key symbol that lights briefly at startup. If it’s there, the car has an immobilizer.

If you turn a metal key to start it and there’s no immobilizer lamp, and it was built before late 2021, it may be one of the affected vehicles.

That’s the actual test. The model list below tells you whether your model was in the affected range; the two checks above tell you about your car.

Which Hyundais were affected

From Hyundai’s Campaign 993 bulletin, hosted by NHTSA, the models that may not have been equipped with an engine immobilizer:

ModelModel years
Sonata (YFa)2011–2014
Sonata (LFa)2015–2019
Elantra (UD/MD)2011–2016
Elantra (AD/ADa)2017–2020
Elantra (CN7/CN7a)2021–2022
Elantra GT (GD)2013–2017
Elantra GT (PD)2018–2020
Venue (QX)2020–2021
Veloster (FS)2012–2017
Veloster (JS)2019–2021
Kona (OS)2018–2022
Accent (HC)2018–2022
Tucson (LM)2011–2015
Tucson (TL)2016–2021
Tucson (NX4/NX4a)2022
Santa Fe Sport (AN)2013–2018
Santa Fe (NC) & Santa Fe XL2013–2018, 2019
Santa Fe (TMa)2019–2022
Palisade (LX2)2020–2021
Genesis Coupe (BK)2013–2014

Being on this list doesn’t mean your particular car lacks an immobilizer. Push-button and lamp-equipped versions of these same models do have one. The two checks above settle it.

When Hyundai made immobilizers standard

The bulletin states it plainly: in November 2021, engine immobilizers became standard on all Hyundai vehicles produced. The cutoff Hyundai uses is vehicles produced after November 20, 2021.

Note that’s a production date, not a model year. A vehicle badged as a 2022 could have been built before the cutoff. The build date is on the label inside the driver’s door jamb, which is worth checking if your Hyundai sits near the boundary.

What Hyundai has offered

Hyundai ran an anti-theft software campaign for affected vehicles — a reflash of the vehicle’s software to add ignition-start logic, rather than fitting new hardware.

If you own an affected Hyundai and haven’t had it done, that’s a conversation with a Hyundai dealer rather than with us. It’s their campaign, and as far as we know there’s no charge for it. Worth asking about before you spend money elsewhere.

What this means for your keys

If your Hyundai has no engine immobilizer, the key is mechanical only — no chip, nothing to program. Cutting a replacement is simpler and cheaper work than for an immobilizer-equipped car.

The flip side is that a correctly cut key is all that’s required to start it, which is precisely the exposure the campaign addresses.

If your Hyundai does have an immobilizer, the key carries a chip that has to be paired to the vehicle, and that’s a different job — covered below.

Programming an immobilizer-equipped Hyundai

Newer Hyundais sit behind a security gateway. Before a diagnostic tool can perform key work, it has to validate against that gateway, and validation runs on credentials issued through the National Automotive Service Task Force to registered professionals.

Key teaching on these vehicles is also PIN-gated, so the security code has to be obtained before a key can be added.

The practical meaning: this isn’t an onboard procedure, and it isn’t something every shop can do. It needs a capable tool plus the credential to get past the gateway. Our key fob replacement guide explains how that credentialing works.

If every key is lost

An all-keys-lost job on an immobilizer-equipped Hyundai needs the same gateway validation and PIN access, which is why it’s a longer piece of work than adding a spare to a car you still have a key for.

Bring every key you own to the appointment regardless. It’s good practice on any vehicle, and it means nothing gets left behind.

What we do on site. We cut and program Hyundai keys and smart keys at the vehicle, including all-keys-lost. Most jobs need a PIN code from the manufacturer’s registry, which we request with your proof of ownership. A few 2020-and-later models are limited by the programming tools; we’ll tell you on the phone.

What to have ready

  • Model year and model
  • Whether it starts with a key or a button
  • Whether there’s an immobilizer lamp in the cluster
  • Every key you own
  • Where the vehicle is, and whether it can be driven
  • Proof of ownership — registration or title, and matching photo ID

What it costs

A mechanical key for a non-immobilizer Hyundai and a proximity fob for a gateway-equipped one are very different jobs. What determines car key replacement cost covers what moves the number.

Fob just stopped working? It may only be the battery.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my Hyundai has an immobilizer?

Two checks from Hyundai’s own bulletin: if it starts with a push button, it has one. If there’s an immobilizer lamp in the instrument cluster, it has one. A metal-key start with no lamp, built before late 2021, may not.

Which Hyundai models didn’t have immobilizers?

The affected list covers certain Sonata, Elantra, Elantra GT, Venue, Veloster, Kona, Accent, Tucson, Santa Fe, Palisade and Genesis Coupe model years — the full table is above, taken from Hyundai’s bulletin.

When did Hyundai start fitting immobilizers as standard?

Hyundai’s bulletin states engine immobilizers became standard on all vehicles produced after November 20, 2021. That’s a production date, not a model year — check the label in the driver’s door jamb.

My Hyundai has no immobilizer. What can I do?

Ask a Hyundai dealer about the anti-theft software campaign for affected vehicles. That’s a manufacturer programme, not a locksmith job.

Can a locksmith cut a key for a non-immobilizer Hyundai?

Yes, and it’s simpler work — there’s no chip to program, just a correctly cut mechanical key.

Can a locksmith program a key for a newer Hyundai?

It requires a capable diagnostic tool plus credentials to validate the vehicle’s security gateway, and the security PIN. Not every shop has both.
