Every kind, one call

Key programming is what makes a new key start your car. The blade gets you into the ignition or the door; the chip inside the key has to be registered with the car’s immobilizer before the engine will run. We do that at your vehicle, through its diagnostic port.

Two different jobs

Which one you need depends on what you’ve still got.

Adding a key when one still works is the straightforward version. Your existing key stays valid and the new one is registered alongside it. On some older vehicles there’s even an owner procedure that needs no tools at all — Ford publishes one that requires two already-programmed keys.

All keys lost is more involved. The immobilizer usually has to be dealt with before new keys can be registered, and on Toyota, Lexus, Honda and Ford that step permanently erases every key that was registered before. That’s why we ask you to bring every key you own, including the ones you think are dead.

Anything not present when that happens doesn’t work afterwards. On any vehicle.

The key has to be the right one

Not just the right shape — the right transponder generation. Ford is the clearest example: an 80-bit blank works on an older Ford, but a 40-bit blank will not work on a 2011-or-newer one, and you can’t tell by looking. The wrong generation fails at the programming step, after everything else has been done.

That’s why the year, make and model come first when you call or text. The right key has to arrive with the van, not be discovered as missing at your car.

Some vehicles need manufacturer data

Key codes and security files aren’t published. They’re released through a vetted registry to people who’ve been background-checked — the same system that stops anyone getting a working key to your car. On some makes there’s a mandatory waiting period built in: General Motors vehicles from 2020 onward carry one, and it can be around two hours.

How this works for your make is covered on our vehicle make pages, and the chip itself is explained in transponder keys.

Fobs and remotes

A fob does two jobs: its buttons work the locks by radio, and its chip talks to the immobilizer. Both get paired and tested. If your fob has simply stopped responding, check the battery first — our key fob battery guide shows how. If a fob needs replacing outright, see key fob replacement.

Proof of ownership, every time

Before any key is programmed: registration or title, plus photo ID with the same name. It isn’t personal. The alternative is programming working keys for whoever asks, and any locksmith who doesn’t check is one you shouldn’t use.

Not just cars

Cars and trucks are most of the work, but they aren’t the only thing with a programmed key. If it rolls, floats or flies, chances are we have a key for it — see vehicle types.

Frequently asked questions

What is car key programming?

Registering a key’s transponder chip with the car’s immobilizer so the engine will start with it, and pairing the remote buttons if the key has them. Cutting a blade is a separate, mechanical step.

Can you program a key I bought online?

Sometimes. It has to be the right transponder generation for your exact year, make and model, and you can’t tell by looking. Tell us what it is before we come out, so neither of us finds out at the programming step.

Do I need to bring all my keys?

For an all-keys-lost job, yes. On several makes resetting the immobilizer permanently erases every key that isn’t present — including the unreliable one and the one you think is dead.

Do you come to the car to program it?

Yes. Programming runs through the vehicle’s diagnostic port, so the equipment travels to the car. That matters most when the car can’t be driven anywhere.

Can I program a car key myself?

On some older vehicles, when you already have working keys — Ford publishes an owner procedure that needs two already-programmed keys. With no working key, no: the immobilizer has to be dealt with using professional equipment.

Why can’t a hardware store kiosk program my key?

Kiosks copy an existing key rather than register a new one with the car, and they can’t help at all when every key is lost. Our guide to who can replace a car key covers what each option can actually do.

Do you program keys for motorcycles, ATVs and boats?

Yes. If it rolls, floats or flies, chances are we have a key for it. Give us the make and model when you call or text and we’ll tell you straight away. See vehicle types.
