Every kind, one call

Poughkeepsie is where we’re based. Every other town on this site is somewhere we drive to; this is the one we drive from. If your car is here and won’t start, we’re not coming from another county.

The station — where the Hudson Line ends

Poughkeepsie is the northern terminus of Metro-North’s Hudson Line, and it’s an Amtrak stop on the Empire Corridor as well. In 2018 it recorded 1,956 weekday Metro-North boardings; Amtrak counted 137,123 riders in fiscal 2025.

The parking is a 1,101-space garage rather than a surface lot, which changes the problem in two ways.

A garage is harder to describe over the phone. “Level three, near the stairwell” is more useful than a plate number when someone’s looking for your car.

And the Amtrak side means longer stays. Metro-North parking is a day; Amtrak parking can be a week. A car left for five days is a car whose fob battery had five days to die quietly, and whose owner discovers it at eleven at night with luggage.

The hospitals, the colleges and the mall

Poughkeepsie has more long-dwell parking than anywhere else in the region, and each type produces a different call.

Two hospitals. Vassar Brothers Medical Center is a 349-bed facility, and MidHudson Regional is the other. Hospital lockouts have their own character — the person is usually already having a bad day, often on shift, often unable to leave. Staff park for twelve hours; visitors park for however long it takes.

Three campuses. Marist has around 6,356 students, Vassar around 2,450, and Dutchess Community College adds a large commuter population. Student cars sit in permit lots all day and often all semester, and a student who loses a key is frequently a student without a spare, because the spare is at a parent’s house in another state.

The Galleria. One of the region’s largest malls, on Route 9, with the parking to match.

And the Walkway. The Poughkeepsie approach to the Walkway Over the Hudson draws several hundred thousand visitors a year to paid lots, most of whom leave a car for a couple of hours and cross a bridge on foot.

The South Road dealer strip

Route 9 through the town carries around eight franchised new-car dealerships — Route 9 Mazda, BMW of the Hudson Valley, Healey Brothers Ford, and Cadillac, Buick, GMC, Chevrolet, Chrysler-group, Kia and Honda stores among them.

That’s unusual for this region, and it changes the honest advice.

In most towns we cover, the nearest franchised dealer for your make is a drive away, and a car that won’t start has to be towed to reach one. In Poughkeepsie, for many makes, the dealer is right there. If your car is drivable and your make is on South Road, that’s a real option worth weighing.

Where a mobile locksmith still makes sense here is when the car isn’t drivable, when the wait matters, or when the make isn’t on the strip. For what each option can actually do, see our comparison of dealers, parts stores and kiosks.

We’re not going to tell you we’re always cheaper than the dealer. What determines the number is on our cost page.

What to have ready when you call

  • Where the car is — and if it’s the station garage, which level
  • Year, make and model
  • Whether you have any working key, including an unreliable one
  • Whether the car can be driven if it starts
  • Proof of ownership — registration or title, and matching photo ID

How quickly we get there. Poughkeepsie is home base, so most calls here are reached within about 30 minutes. You get a real arrival time on the phone before we set off.

Frequently asked questions

Are you actually based in Poughkeepsie?

Yes. It’s our home town — every other area we cover is somewhere we travel to from here.

I’m locked out at the train station garage.

Tell us which level and roughly where. The garage holds around 1,100 vehicles and finding a car by description alone takes longer than it needs to.

My car has been at the station for a week and now the fob is dead.

Common after Amtrak trips. Try the battery first — it’s often the whole problem and takes two minutes. See our key fob battery guide.

There are dealers on Route 9 for my make. Should I just go there?

If the car is drivable, that’s a legitimate option and we’ll say so. It stops being one when the car won’t move, when the wait is the problem, or when your make isn’t on the strip.

Can you come to the hospital or a campus lot?

Yes. Those are among the places we’re called to most often here.

Do you need proof the car is mine?

Yes, always — registration or title plus matching photo ID. That protects your vehicle, and any locksmith who skips it is one to avoid.

What if I’ve lost every key?

That’s a bigger job than adding a spare and depends on your make and model year. See our key fob replacement guide.
