Every kind, one call

Beacon has three places where cars sit for hours with their owners somewhere else: the Metro-North lot, the ferry landing, and the Hudson Highlands trailheads. All three produce the same call — someone back at their car with no working key. We come to the vehicle rather than the vehicle coming to us.

The station lot

Beacon station is the busiest Metro-North stop in either Dutchess or Putnam county. In 2018 it recorded 2,828 weekday boardings, and the lots around it hold roughly 1,430 vehicles across permit and metered spaces, run by LAZ.

That’s fourteen hundred cars sitting from early morning until after dark, while their keys travel to Grand Central and back.

The lockouts here have a particular shape. Nobody notices a problem at 6am — the car worked, the train came. The problem surfaces at 7pm in a dark lot: a fob that won’t respond, a key that’s somewhere between here and Manhattan, or a spare that stopped working weeks ago and nobody tested.

It’s also the only lot in the county where the fix has a deadline attached. The metered spaces have limits, and a car that can’t move overnight becomes a second problem on top of the first.

The ferry landing

This is what makes Beacon different from every other station in the region.

The Newburgh–Beacon Ferry lands here, connecting to the west side of the river, with an MTA-permitted commuter lot alongside. Around 32,000 people rode it in 2024.

That creates a situation nowhere else has: the car and the driver can end up on opposite sides of the Hudson. Someone parks in Newburgh, takes the ferry across, catches the train — and now a key problem in Beacon involves a person who isn’t in Beacon and can’t easily get here.

If that’s your situation, the useful thing to know is that the vehicle’s location is what matters, not yours. Tell us where the car is and what you drive, and it can usually be dealt with before you get back across.

The trailheads

Mount Beacon and the Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve draw day hikers year-round, and the parking works the way trailhead parking always does — arrive early, leave the car, come back tired.

A hiking lockout is a different problem from a commuter lockout. There’s often no cell signal at the trailhead, the light is going, and a key that went into a jacket pocket at the summit has had six hours to fall out somewhere on a mountain.

The practical advice is the same everywhere and worth repeating here: a proximity fob in an unzipped pocket on a scramble is a fob that may not come back. Our guide to keyless car theft and key security covers where to keep them; the short version for a hike is a zipped internal pocket, not a hip pocket.

Dia Beacon adds to this on the other end of town — around 100,000 visitors a year, with its own lot and overflow onto the rail parking.

If you’re at the dealer end of town

Beacon has one franchised dealership, Healey Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram on Route 52 — a Chrysler-group store.

That matters for two reasons. If you drive a Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep or Ram, you have a local dealer option and it’s worth knowing that. If you drive anything else, the nearest franchised store for your make is out of town — the Route 9 corridor in Wappingers Falls and Poughkeepsie, or across the bridge in Newburgh.

For a car that won’t start, “out of town” means a tow before anyone looks at it. That’s the calculation a mobile locksmith changes, and it’s more relevant in Beacon than in a town with a dealer strip.

Our guide to what each option can actually do covers dealers, parts stores and kiosks in detail.

Getting here from Poughkeepsie

Beacon is roughly half an hour south of our base by road — down Route 9D along the river, or Route 9 to I-84 and west to Exit 41.

Worth saying plainly: this is far enough that we’re not around the corner. It’s also well inside where we work, and it’s a route we run regularly.

How quickly we get there. Most calls in Beacon are reached within about an hour. You get a real arrival time on the phone before we set off.

What to have ready when you call

  • Where exactly the car is — station lot, ferry lot, trailhead, Main Street
  • Year, make and model
  • Whether you have any working key, including one that’s become unreliable
  • Whether the car can be driven if it starts
  • Proof of ownership — registration or title, and matching photo ID

That last one isn’t negotiable and it’s not personal. Nobody should be opening cars for people who can’t show the car is theirs.

Frequently asked questions

Do you come to Beacon?

Yes. Beacon is inside our regular service area, roughly half an hour from our base in Poughkeepsie.

I’m locked out at Beacon station. Can you get to me?

Yes — the station lots are one of the places we’re called to most often in Beacon. Tell us which lot and where in it the car is; that lot is large.

My car is in Beacon but I’m not.

That’s common here because of the ferry. The vehicle’s location is what matters. Tell us where it is and what you drive and we can usually sort it before you get back.

Is there a car dealer in Beacon?

One franchised store — Healey Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram on Route 52, covering the Chrysler group. For other makes the nearest franchised dealers are the Route 9 corridor or across the river in Newburgh.

Can you make a key if I’ve lost all of them?

Usually, though it’s a bigger job than adding a spare and it depends on your make and model year. See our key fob replacement guide for what’s involved.

What if my fob just stopped working?

Try the battery first — it’s a two-minute job and often the whole answer. Our key fob battery guide covers how to tell.

Do you cover the rest of the area around Beacon?

Yes — Fishkill, Wappingers Falls, Cold Spring and the surrounding towns. Full coverage on our service areas page.
