Every kind, one call
Newburgh has something no other town we cover has: an international airport. Airport parking is measured in days rather than hours, and the person who owns the car is, by definition, a long way from it.
Stewart
Stewart International Airport sits partly in the Town of Newburgh and partly in New Windsor, run by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and handled around 237,000 passengers in 2025.
Airport long-stay parking creates a specific kind of key problem, and it’s worse than any of the others.
The car has been sitting for days. A fob that was marginal on the way out has had a week of cold, or a week of heat, to finish the job. Battery failures cluster around returns for exactly this reason.
The driver has just landed. Late, tired, with luggage, often after midnight. It’s the worst moment to discover a problem and the moment it most often gets discovered.
And the spare is not nearby. By definition. It’s at home, and home might be a long drive or another state entirely.
If you’re flying out of Stewart and your fob has been temperamental, the two minutes it takes to change the battery beforehand is the best-value maintenance in this whole business. Our key fob battery guide covers it.
The ferry, from the other side
The Newburgh–Beacon Ferry runs from the waterfront here across to Beacon and the Metro-North Hudson Line.
We’ve written about this from the Beacon end. From Newburgh it’s the mirror image: people park on this side, take the boat, catch a train, and come back at night — which means a car sitting on the Newburgh waterfront belonging to someone whose day has taken them across a river and down to Manhattan.
The practical point either way is that where the car is matters more than where you are. Tell us the vehicle’s location and we can usually get to it before you’re back.

The hospital and the college
Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall runs its inpatient hospital here on Dubois Street — 242 beds, and the system’s main site. That’s twelve-hour shift parking and open-ended visitor parking, every day of the year.
Mount Saint Mary College adds around 2,141 undergraduates on a sixty-acre campus above the river. Student cars sit for weeks at a time, and students are the group least likely to have a working spare nearby — it’s usually at a parent’s house somewhere else.
Nine dealers on one road
The Route 17K and Auto Park Place corridor is the densest franchised-dealer cluster in Orange County — around nine stores.
Newburgh Toyota, Healey Kia, a Buick and GMC store, Nissan, and Morehead Honda are on it, with Ford, Lincoln, Chevrolet, Cadillac and Chrysler-group franchises in the same run.
That means most drivers here have a local dealer for their make, and if the car is drivable that’s a legitimate route. We’ll say so rather than pretend the strip isn’t there.
Where it stops working is the same three situations as everywhere: a car that won’t move, a wait you can’t afford, or a make that isn’t on 17K. And it’s worth noting that a car stuck in the long-stay lot at Stewart is exactly the first case — nine dealers on Route 17K are no help to a vehicle that can’t reach Route 17K.
Our comparison of the options covers the rest.
Getting here from Poughkeepsie
Newburgh is about half an hour from our base, across the Newburgh–Beacon Bridge or down the west side.
Yes, we cross the river. Newburgh is a regular run rather than an exception, and the airport is one of the reasons.
How quickly we get there. Most calls in Newburgh are reached within about an hour, sometimes longer at rush hour or with bridge traffic. You get a real arrival time on the phone before we set off.
What to have ready
- Where the car is — Stewart long-stay, the ferry lot, the hospital, the campus, Route 17K
- If it’s the airport, which lot and roughly where
- Year, make and model
- Whether you have any working key, and where it is
- Whether you’ve just landed — it changes what’s realistic
- Proof of ownership — registration or title, and matching photo ID

Frequently asked questions
I’ve landed at Stewart and my car won’t unlock.
The most common airport call, and it’s usually the fob battery after days in the cold. Tell us the lot and where in it. We come to the vehicle.
How can I avoid that happening?
Change the fob battery before you fly if it’s been at all temperamental. It’s a two-minute job and it’s the cheapest insurance in this business. See our key fob battery guide.
Do you cross the river?
Yes. Newburgh is around half an hour from our base and one of the west-side places we cover regularly.
My car is on the Newburgh waterfront but I’m in Beacon.
Common because of the ferry. The car’s location is what matters — tell us where it is and what you drive.
There are nine dealers on 17K. Why call you?
If the car is drivable and your make is on the strip, often you shouldn’t. Call us when the car can’t move — which includes anything stuck in the airport lot — when the wait is the problem, or when your make isn’t there.
Is there a train station in Newburgh?
No. The nearest Port Jervis Line station is Salisbury Mills–Cornwall, and the ferry connects to Beacon on the Hudson Line.
I’m a student at Mount Saint Mary and my spare is at home.
Common. Having a new key made here is often faster than waiting for one to be posted, and it means you have two again.
