Every kind, one call
Kingston has no train station, and neither does anywhere else in Ulster County. That single fact changes where cars sit and why they’re left — and it’s the first thing to understand about a key problem on this side of the river.
No rail, and what replaces it
Across the Hudson, the pattern is stations. Beacon, Brewster, Poughkeepsie — cars parked at dawn, keys carried to the city, problems surfacing after dark.
Ulster County has none of that. There is no Metro-North here and no passenger rail of any kind. The nearest are Poughkeepsie and Rhinecliff, both across the river.
So the long-stay parking in Kingston is three other things: a Thruway park-and-ride, two hospital campuses, and an intercity bus terminal. Different lots, different people, same underlying problem when a key stops working.
The Thruway lot
The park-and-ride at Thruway Exit 19 holds 236 spaces and is the largest we’ve found anywhere in the four counties we cover.
That’s a carpool and commuter-coach lot rather than a rail lot, and the distinction matters. A rail commuter comes back on a scheduled train. A carpooler comes back when whoever drove them decides to come back — and if they can’t get into their car at that point, the person who could have given them a lift home has usually already gone.
The Trailways terminal on Washington Avenue adds the intercity version. Daily service to New York City means people leaving cars for days rather than hours, and a fob that sat through a cold weekend is a fob that may not respond on the return.

Two hospitals
HealthAlliance runs two campuses in Kingston — the Broadway site and the Mary’s Avenue site, both part of the WMCHealth network.
Two hospitals in one small city produces a lot of long-stay parking. Staff work twelve-hour shifts. Visitors stay for as long as it takes, which nobody can predict. And the lots are busy every day of the year, unlike the seasonal parking that dominates much of Ulster County.
Hospital calls have a particular urgency at one end only. Nobody minds a key problem at ten in the morning when they’re inside anyway. At the end of a night shift it’s the last thing anyone wants.
SUNY Ulster’s Kingston Center adds a smaller satellite campus, though the main campus is out at Stone Ridge.
The dealer corridor
Kingston is dealer-dense — around ten franchised makes along the Ulster Avenue, Route 28 and Schwenk Drive corridor.
The Romeo group carries Chevrolet, Buick and GMC, plus Ford, Kia and Volkswagen stores. Prestige Toyota is on the same corridor, with further franchises alongside.
If you drive one of those and your car is drivable, the dealer is genuinely close and worth considering. We’d rather tell you that than pretend otherwise.
Where a mobile locksmith still makes sense is the usual three: the car won’t move, the wait is the problem, or your make isn’t in the cluster. Our comparison of what each option can do covers the detail, and what determines the cost covers the money.
Getting here from Poughkeepsie
Kingston is roughly half an hour from our base, across the Kingston–Rhinecliff Bridge and up US-9W, or via the Thruway.
Yes, we cross the river. Kingston is one of the west-side cities we cover regularly rather than occasionally.
How quickly we get there. Most calls in Kingston are reached within about an hour, sometimes longer at rush hour or with bridge traffic. You get a real arrival time on the phone before we set off.
What to have ready
- Which lot — Thruway park-and-ride, which hospital campus, Trailways, uptown or Rondout
- Year, make and model
- Whether you have any working key
- Whether the car can be driven if it starts
- Proof of ownership — registration or title, and matching photo ID

Frequently asked questions
Is there a train station in Kingston?
No. Ulster County has no passenger rail at all. The nearest stations are Poughkeepsie and Rhinecliff, both across the river.
Do you actually come across the Hudson?
Yes. Kingston is about half an hour from our base and a regular run, not an exception.
I carpooled from the Thruway lot and now I can’t get into my car.
That’s the common Kingston call. The person who drove you has usually gone, and there’s no train to wait for — tell us which end of the lot and what you drive.
I’m finishing a shift at HealthAlliance.
Tell us which campus, Broadway or Mary’s Avenue, and roughly when you finish. We’d rather work to your shift than have you waiting.
There are dealers on Ulster Avenue for my make. Should I use them?
If the car is drivable, that’s a fair option and we’ll say so. It stops being one when the car can’t move, when the wait matters, or when your make isn’t in the cluster.
My fob died while my car sat at the bus terminal for a week.
Common after a Trailways trip, especially in winter. Try the battery first — see our key fob battery guide.
Do you cover the towns around Kingston?
Yes — Hurley, Esopus, Marbletown and the rest. Full coverage on our service areas page.
