Every kind, one call
Highland sits at the west end of the Walkway Over the Hudson, directly across the river from our base. Most car key calls here happen in the same few lots — the ones where people leave a car to walk across a bridge.
The Walkway lots
The Walkway’s west approach is on Haviland Road, with the Rail Trail Caboose Lot and a lower gravel lot serving it.
The bridge draws somewhere north of half a million visitors a year across both approaches. What that means on the ground is a lot full of cars whose owners are somewhere over the Hudson on foot, typically for a couple of hours, sometimes longer if they’ve walked into Poughkeepsie for lunch.
It’s a mild version of the trailhead pattern — shorter stays than a hike, but the same essential situation: the driver is a long way from the vehicle and can’t quickly get back to it.
What changed in 2025
Worth knowing if you haven’t been in a while.
All the Haviland Road parking became paid on 1 January 2025, under the Town of Lloyd, with a non-resident annual pass at $100.
For most visits that’s a minor cost. It matters when a car can’t move — a vehicle stuck in a paid lot is accruing something on top of the original problem, and the sooner it’s dealt with the better. Mention it when you call.

No dealer here
Highland has no franchised car dealership. The nearest are in Kingston to the north, or back across the bridge in Poughkeepsie.
Across the bridge is close in a working car. In one that won’t start, the bridge is irrelevant — it’s a tow either way.
Our comparison of the options covers what each can actually do.

- Which lot — Caboose, lower gravel, or elsewhere on Haviland Road

Frequently asked questions
Is the Walkway parking still free?
Not on the Highland side. All Haviland Road parking became paid on 1 January 2025 under the Town of Lloyd, with a non-resident annual pass available.
I walked across and my fob won’t work.
Common at both ends of the bridge. Try the battery first — see our key fob battery guide. If that isn’t it, tell us which lot the car is in.
Is there a car dealer in Highland?
No franchised dealer in town. The nearest are Kingston to the north or Poughkeepsie across the river.
How far is Highland from you?
A few minutes across the Mid-Hudson Bridge — one of the closest places we cover on the west side.
What if I’ve lost all my keys?
Bigger job than a spare and it depends on your make and year. See our key fob replacement guide.
