Every kind, one call

Brewster has two Metro-North stations, roughly 1,500 parking spaces between them, and a metered limit on the bigger one. That last detail is why a key problem here has a clock attached that it doesn’t have anywhere else we work.

Two stations, not one

This catches people out, including people who live here.

Southeast is the larger one, on Independent Way. It recorded 1,829 weekday riders in 2018, ranking 35th of the 109 stations on the network, with around 1,010 parking spaces run by the Town of Southeast.

Brewster is the village station, with 1,174 weekday riders in 2018 and about 517 spaces spread across several lots — the main uphill lot, the Route 6 eastbound lots, and Ellen Avenue.

Together that’s roughly 3,000 people a day and about 1,500 cars, in a town where a fair number of residents will tell you they park “at the station” without specifying which.

So when you call, say which one. It saves a drive between two lots that are a few minutes apart.

The sixteen-hour limit

The metered spaces at Southeast carry a maximum stay of sixteen hours.

For a normal commute that’s irrelevant — you’re back within twelve. It becomes very relevant when your car can’t move.

A dead fob at seven in the evening is an inconvenience. A dead fob at seven in the evening in a metered space with a limit is a car that has a deadline for being drivable again, and that’s a different level of urgency than the same problem in a supermarket car park.

Worth mentioning when you call. It moves things up the list.

Which lot are you in?

The village station’s parking is split, which is the other thing to be specific about. “The main lot up the hill,” “the Route 6 side,” and “Ellen Avenue” are three different places.

If you’re at Southeast, the lot is large but single, so a row or a landmark is usually enough.

The Route 22 dealers

Brewster has three franchised dealerships clustered on Route 22 — Lia Honda, Brewster Ford and Brewster Subaru.

If you drive a Honda, a Ford or a Subaru, you have a local dealer option here, and that’s worth knowing rather than us pretending otherwise. If the car is drivable and you’re not in a hurry, it’s a reasonable route.

Where it stops being reasonable is when the car won’t move — three dealers on Route 22 don’t help a vehicle stuck in a station lot — or when your make isn’t one of the three. The nearest hospital is in Carmel and so is the nearest dealer for most other makes.

Our comparison of what each option can do covers dealers, parts stores and kiosks generally.

Getting here from Poughkeepsie

Brewster is roughly three quarters of an hour from our base, east and south across Putnam County.

That’s honest distance and worth saying. It’s also a run we make regularly, because two commuter stations generate the kind of call we do most.

How quickly we get there. Most calls in Brewster are reached within about an hour, sometimes longer at rush hour or with bridge traffic. You get a real arrival time on the phone before we set off.

What to have ready when you call

  • Which station — Southeast or the village — and which lot
  • Year, make and model
  • Whether you have any working key
  • Whether the space is metered, and roughly when you parked
  • Proof of ownership — registration or title, and matching photo ID

Frequently asked questions

Which Brewster station am I at?

Southeast is the large one on Independent Way with around 1,010 spaces. The village station is smaller, with parking split across an uphill lot, the Route 6 side and Ellen Avenue. They’re a few minutes apart.

How long can I leave my car at Southeast?

The metered spaces carry a sixteen-hour maximum. If your car can’t move, that limit is worth mentioning when you call.

Do you come to Brewster?

Yes. It’s around three quarters of an hour from our base in Poughkeepsie, and the two commuter lots make it a regular run.

There are dealers on Route 22 — should I use them?

If you drive a Honda, Ford or Subaru and the car is drivable, that’s a fair option. It stops being one when the car can’t move or your make isn’t among the three.

My fob stopped working while I was at work in the city.

Very common at both stations. Check the battery first — see our key fob battery guide. If a fresh battery doesn’t fix it, the problem is the fob or the car.

Can you do a key with none at all?

Usually, but it’s a longer job and depends on your make and model year. See our key fob replacement guide.

Do you cover Carmel and Patterson too?

Yes — full coverage on our service areas page.
